How to Use a Starlink with the IRL Backpack / LiveU Solo PRO

The IRL Backpack and LiveU Solo PRO can connect seamlessly to the WiFi network of a Starlink router, whether you're using the Starlink Mini or Standard hardware. It can also be connected wired via Ethernet.

Connecting your IRL Backpack or LiveU Solo to Starlink enables usage in areas with extremely poor or no cellular service. By connecting your Starlink satellite connection to your LiveU along with your normal Solo Connect modems (or your own 4G/5G modems), you can ensure your broadcast will be successful even in the most crowded or remote places.

The disadvantages of streaming off a standalone Starlink connection (short disconnections when the Starlink “dish” switches satellites) can be addressed thru bonding alongside cellular connections. It is not recommended to stream solely off of a single Starlink connection.

About the Starlink Mini

Starlink Mini is an all-in-one fully integrated satellite dish & WiFi router and features one Ethernet port as well as a kickstand. The Mini dish itself is 10.2 by 11.75 inches, with a maximum depth of 1.45 inches, making it an easy addition to your streaming setup when streaming from semi-fixed locations.

Powering Your Starlink Mini

AC Power:

Starlink's preferred power source is the AC adapter that comes with the Starlink Mini.

USB C:

If you wish to power Starlink Mini using USB-C, you will need a USB-C to barrel jack cable accessory. The power source and cable must fit the necessary power demand of (20V/5A 100W). [Note: Online reports indicate that 65W power banks are functional as well. Thus, our Power X1 USB C power bank would power the Starlink Mini.]

In vehicles, you can also use a 12V (Cigarette Lighter) USB-C Inverter (example).

Setting Up Your Starlink Mini with the IRL Backpack

Connect to WiFi:

• Simply connect the IRL Backpack to the WiFi network provided by the Mini's router in the LiveU's interface settings.

Wired Connection:

• Remove the Ethernet port plug from the Mini’s Ethernet port (Note that according to the user manual, the Mini is no longer rated IP67 with a standard RJ45 cable)
• Plug an Ethernet cable from the Mini into the side of the LiveU Solo encoder.
• The interface will be recognized on the LiveU display under the Interfaces menu.

Recommended Settings:

• It is recommended to use the LiveU's LRT (LiveU Reliable Transport) bonding service alongside Solo Connect modems.
• Bond the Starlink signal with the Backpack or LiveU’s normal 4G/5G modems to ensure stable service.
• Using both connection options simultaneously increases the odds of a successful broadcast in remote areas.

Ensuring Optimal Performance

Your Starlink requires a clear view of the sky to maintain a connection with the satellites as they move overhead. Ensure there are no obstructions like tree branches, poles, or roofs between your Starlink and the sky. This clear line of sight is crucial for maintaining a stable internet connection.
